Jamie Metzl: Hacking Darwin: Genetic Engineering and the Future of Humanity

Tuesday, November 12, 7:30 pm, Sandler Family Campus

When Jamie Metzl is in Tidewater, he’ll talk about genetically modified humans, conception without sex – and chocolate. Jamie Metzl’s life is a juxtaposition. A master of genetic manipulation, Metzl is a geopolitical expert, technology futurist and self-titled cacao shaman. His has a passion for sharing the healing properties of cacao and looking under the hood at what it means to be human.

As a Senior Fellow of the Atlantic Council and recent appointee to the World Health Organization Expert Advisory Council, Metzl is tasked with developing global standards for the governance and oversight of human genome editing.

He wrote Hacking Darwin, Genetic Engineering and the Future of Humanity, a groundbreaking exploration of the arms race, as a wake-up call to the urgency of the genetic revolution – what’s happening, what’s at stake, and what we need to do now to prepare. Metzl predicts the genetic revolution will radically alter healthcare from a system based on averages, to one based on individual biology; revolutionize the way babies are made, as well as the nature of the babies, and refashion our evolution as a species. And all sooner than anyone can imagine.

On “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast, Metzl noted, “there is a small window of time for us to have an inclusive conversation about how changes are made. If we have the same approach to genetically modified humans that we have to genetically modified food, people will go berserk. We need to infuse the conversation with our best values to optimize the good stuff and minimize the bad.”
